Visiting Older Family Members—Signs to Look for this Holiday Season

With the holidays fast approaching, we are surrounded by friends and family, including parents and grandparents. As our loved ones get older, it is important to look for symptoms of mental and physical decline, especially if they are living alone.

It’s easy to see when are loved ones are struggling with normal daily activities, perhaps they are moving more slowly or falling down. But cognitive decline, such as Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia are many times not as obvious.

Signs and symptoms of dementia can include:

  •  Memory loss

  • Difficulty communicating with others

  • Difficulty with reasoning and problem-solving

  • Confusion and disorientation

  • Losing balance and problems with movement

  • Wandering and getting lost

  • Personality changes

  • Depression

  • Anxiety
